What a handyman is good for
A handyman takes care of the small jobs that pile up around a flat or house: a door that sticks, a curtain rail that fell down, a tap that drips, a wardrobe still in its box. On their own, these are too small to book a plumber or a carpenter for. Together, they are a morning's work for one person with a van and a full toolbox.
In Malta, handymen are also handy when you rent out a property. Between tenants or guests there is often a short list of fixes, and one visit can sort out the silicone, the loose handle and the patch of wall that needs a touch of paint.
Reliable does not mean they can do everything. The handymen worth calling back are the ones who tell you plainly when a job is beyond them.
Where a handyman's job ends
Some jobs in Malta are regulated, so the person doing them needs the right authorisation or licence. A handyman may hold one, but you should not assume it. Ask before the work starts, not after.
Under the Electrical Installations Regulations (S.L. 545.24), the installation, alteration, extension and certification of single phase and three phase electrical installations require an authorisation, issued by the Regulator for Energy and Water Services (REWS).
SourceThe Construction Industry Licensing Regulations (L.N. 166 of 2023) list three service activities that need a licence from the Building and Construction Authority (BCA): demolition, excavation and piling, and construction.
Source| The job | Fine for a handyman? | Who to call if not |
|---|---|---|
| Hanging shelves, mirrors, pictures and blinds | Yes | Not needed |
| Assembling flat-pack furniture | Yes | A carpenter for fitted kitchens and built-in wardrobes |
| Resealing a bath, shower or sink | Yes | A plumber if water is leaking behind the tiles |
| Fixing a dripping tap or a running toilet | Usually | A plumber for burst pipes or anything inside a wall |
| Adding a socket, a circuit or a new light point | Only with a REWS authorisation | An authorised electrician |
| Knocking down or opening a wall | No | A perit first, then a BCA licensed contractor |
| Patching small cracks and touching up paint | Yes | A painter for whole rooms or a façade |
Read your list out and ask which jobs they would hand to someone else. A reliable handyman answers straight away. One who says yes to everything, wiring included, is a gamble.
Brief the job so you get a real quote
Most disappointment with handymen starts with a vague brief. "A few small jobs" can mean an hour or two days. The clearer your list, the closer the quote will be to the final bill, and the more likely they turn up with the right parts.

Send the same list and photos on WhatsApp to two or three people. You get the answers in writing, and you can see who replies with useful questions and who just sends a figure.
Hourly, half day or fixed price
Handymen in Malta charge in different ways, and no single method is the cheapest. The right one depends on how clear the work is. We do not quote figures because rates change with the person, the area and the season.
| How they charge | Works well for | Ask about |
|---|---|---|
| By the hour | A long list of small, mixed tasks | The minimum charge and how travel time is counted |
| Half day or full day | Several jobs grouped into one visit | What happens if the list runs over |
| Fixed price per job | One clear job, such as mounting a TV | Whether fixings and parts are included |
| Parts on top | Any of the above | Whether you get the receipts for what they buy |
Gozo adds a question of its own: if the handyman lives on the other island, ask whether the crossing and the travel time are part of the price.
How to tell if a handyman is reliable
Tminta does not vet the people listed, and nobody can promise a stranger will be good. You can still stack the odds in your favour with a few checks.
- Ask for photos of recent work that looks like yours, not just a logo and a phone number.
- Ask for a past client you can message. A quick reply from a real customer tells you a lot.
- Watch how they handle the first contact. Someone who replies, confirms the day and then turns up when they said is likely to finish the job the same way.
- Agree the list, the price and the day in writing, even if it is only a WhatsApp message.
- Ask whether they are insured in case they damage something in your home.
- Ask whether they clean up and take their rubbish away.
Warning signs
- They will not give any idea of the price until the work is done.
- They want a large payment before buying any parts.
- They happily take on electrical work without mentioning an authorisation.
- They keep moving the day, or go quiet once they have a deposit.
- They offer to remove a wall "quickly" without asking whether it is structural.
From list to finished job

Questions people ask
How much does a handyman cost in Malta?
It depends on how they charge and what you give them to do. An hourly or day rate suits a long list of small tasks, and a fixed price suits one clear job. Parts, travel, parking, working at height and a trip to Gozo all push the price up. Send the same list and photos to two or three handymen and compare the written replies.
Does a handyman need a licence in Malta?
Some of the work on a typical list is regulated, and some is not covered by these rules at all. Electrical installation work needs a REWS authorisation, and demolition and construction are licensed by the BCA. If your list includes wiring or knocking through a wall, ask the handyman whether they hold the right authorisation, or bring in someone who does.
What skills should a handyman have?
Look for someone confident with basic carpentry, fixings into stone and concrete, silicone and sealing, small plumbing repairs, and making good with filler and paint. Just as important are the soft skills: replying on time, turning up when promised, protecting your floors and cleaning up. Ask for photos of jobs like yours to see the skills in practice.
Can I find a handyman in Gozo?
Yes. Check the towns shown on each profile, as some handymen are based in Gozo and others travel from Malta. For a handyman coming across, group your jobs so one trip covers them, and ask whether the ferry and travel time are included in the quote.
