How it works
- 1Adding VAT: VAT = price × rate. Price with VAT = price + VAT.
- 2Removing VAT: price without VAT = price with VAT ÷ (1 + rate). VAT = the difference.
- 3Malta's standard rate is 18%. Reduced rates of 12%, 7%, 5% and 0% apply only to the goods and services the VAT Act lists.
- 4Amounts are rounded to the cent for display.
Questions
What is the VAT rate in Malta?
The standard rate is 18%. The reduced rates are 12%, 7%, 5% and 0%, and each covers only specific supplies listed in the VAT Act. For example, licensed tourist accommodation is at 7%, and electricity and printed matter are at 5%. If your goods or services are not on a list, the standard rate applies.
Do I have to charge VAT as a freelancer?
Not always. A small business whose domestic turnover in the previous calendar year was not more than €35,000 (excluding VAT) can register under Article 11 and does not charge VAT. Above that, or if you choose, you register under Article 10 and charge VAT. Ask an accountant which suits you, because each has rules on invoices and returns.
How do I work out VAT backwards from a total?
Divide the total by 1 plus the rate. For 18%, divide by 1.18 to get the price before VAT, and the rest is the VAT. Choose 'Take VAT out' in the calculator to do it for you.
