How it works
- 1Wall area = the room's perimeter (2 × (length + width)) × height, minus doors and windows.
- 2Ceiling area = length × width, if you include it.
- 3Litres = area × number of coats ÷ the coverage on your tin (m² per litre).
- 4Coverage depends on the paint and the surface. Bare plaster and rough walls drink more paint, so check the tin and ask about a primer or mist coat on new plaster.
Questions
How many coats of paint do I need?
A change of colour or fresh plaster usually needs more coats than repainting in the same colour. New plaster often needs a diluted first coat or a primer. The tin will say how many coats the maker recommends, so use that number in the calculator.
Where do I find the coverage of my paint?
It is printed on the tin or the product sheet, as square metres per litre. Use the lower number if the tin gives a range, especially for rough or absorbent walls.
Should I include doors and windows?
Take them off the wall area, unless they are very small. The calculator uses the sizes you enter, so measure your own doors and windows if they are bigger than usual.
