How it works

  1. 1Area = width × height for a wall (times two if you board both sides), or length × width for a ceiling, minus openings.
  2. 2Boards = area ÷ the area of one board, plus the allowance, rounded up.
  3. 3Check the board size with your supplier. Moisture-resistant boards are often asked for in kitchens and bathrooms, and fire-rated ones where the rules or your perit require them.

Questions

Do partition walls need boards on both sides?

Yes, a stud partition is usually boarded on both sides, and some systems use two layers per side for sound or fire. Tick both sides in the calculator, and add the extra layer by doubling the result if your system has one.

What else do I need besides boards?

Metal studs and tracks or a ceiling grid, screws, joint tape, jointing compound and corner beads. Your gypsum contractor will usually supply these in their price, so ask what the quote includes.

How much extra should I allow?

Rooms with many openings, bulkheads or angles need more cuts. Ask your contractor what allowance they use. Leftover full boards are easy to store for repairs.
