How it works
- 1Profit = what you earned from your work in the year minus your business expenses.
- 2Income tax = profit × the rate for your band, minus the band's subtraction amount, from the 2026 MTCA table for your computation (single, married or parent).
- 3The new 2026 rates for parents and married couples with children apply only if you meet the conditions MTCA sets, so tick the box only if you do.
- 4Class 2 social security: €36.18 a week up to €12,543.72 of net income, then 15% of net income, up to a weekly maximum (€73.56 if born up to 1961, €83.89 if born from 1962). Weekly amounts × 52.
- 5This is an estimate. It does not include deductions, allowances, other income, the part-time rules or any credits, and the Class 2 table is the one MTCA publishes for 2026.
Questions
How much tax do self-employed people pay in Malta?
Income tax depends on your profit and your computation. For a single person in 2026, the first €12,000 is taxed at 0%, then the bands are 15%, 25% and 35%, using MTCA's subtraction method. You also pay Class 2 social security. The calculator shows both for the profit you enter.
What are Class 2 social security contributions?
They are the social security contributions paid by people who work for themselves. MTCA says they are paid by everyone with more than €910 a year from an economic activity who is not employed. For 2026 the weekly rate starts at €36.18 and becomes 15% of net income above €12,543.72, up to a maximum.
Who can use the new tax rates for parents?
MTCA's 2026 table adds new rates for married couples and parents with one child or two or more children. You must be resident, and either a spouse is a Malta or EU/EEA national, or you are a long-term resident whose child was born and lives in Malta. A child counts up to 18, or 23 in full-time education. Check with MTCA or an accountant.
Is this my final tax bill?
No. It is an estimate from your profit and the published rates. Your real bill depends on deductions, other income, provisional tax already paid and your exact situation. Use it to plan and to set money aside, and ask an accountant for the real figure.
