How to Hire an Electrician in Malta
Wiring is one job where a cheap mistake can cost you a lot. This guide shows what to check, what to ask, and how to compare quotes before you let anyone open a socket.

Check the authorisation first
In Malta, electrical installation work is regulated. Before you compare prices or availability, ask to see the electrician's authorisation and note the number.
Under the Electrical Installations Regulations (S.L. 545.24), installing, altering, extending or certifying an electrical installation needs an authorisation issued by the Regulator for Energy and Water Services (REWS).
SourceThere are two classes. Authorisation A covers single phase installations. Authorisation B covers single phase and three phase installations, with limits on certifying the largest three phase installations.
SourceIf your flat or house has one phase, an A holder can do the work. Bigger houses, workshops and some villas have three phase supply. Ask before you book, so the right person turns up.

A good electrician answers these without fuss. If someone avoids the authorisation question, or will only quote a price on the day, keep looking.
What changes the price
Prices in Malta vary a lot from job to job, so we do not list figures. These are the things that move a quote up or down, so you can compare like with like.

How do I check an electrician is licensed in Malta?
Ask for their REWS authorisation number and its class (A or B). Authorised electricians can show it. If someone cannot or will not show it, do not let them work on your installation.
Is there an emergency electrician in Malta 24/7?
Some electricians take urgent calls in the evening and at weekends. Ask about the rate before they come out, because urgent work is often priced differently. If you smell burning or see sparks, switch off the main switch first.
Do electricians work in Gozo?
Yes. Some are based in Gozo and some travel from Malta. Ask whether travel or the ferry is added to the quote.
