About tattoo artists in Malta

Tattoo artists in Malta work from studios, often with resident and visiting guest artists. Most have a clear style: fine line, blackwork, realism, traditional, lettering or colour. Pick the artist whose healed work you like, not the nearest studio. Some studios also offer piercing, which is licensed separately.

Small pieces can sometimes be done the same day as a walk-in. Larger or custom designs start with a consultation, where you talk about size, placement and how the design will age, then book a session and usually pay a deposit. Big pieces such as sleeves are often done over several sessions with time to heal in between.

The price depends on the size, the detail, the placement on the body, colour or black and grey, and how many hours or sessions it takes. Cover-ups and reworks of older tattoos take more planning. Some artists charge by the piece and others by the hour. Ask what the deposit covers and how it works if you need to move a date.

Questions

How much does a tattoo cost in Malta?

There is no standard price. Size, detail, placement, colour and the number of hours all change the cost, and an artist in demand may charge more for their time. A small walk-in piece and a full sleeve are priced in completely different ways. Send the artist a reference image with the size and placement, and ask for an estimate and the deposit in writing.

What is the legal age for a tattoo in Malta?

The Control of Tattooing Act makes it an offence to tattoo anyone under eighteen, and also an offence for someone under eighteen to ask for one. A licensed artist should ask for ID if you look young. If a studio is happy to tattoo a minor, that tells you a lot about how it works in general.

Do I need an appointment, or can I walk in?

Some studios keep walk-in time for small, simple designs, often from a set of ready drawings called flash. Custom work, cover-ups and larger pieces almost always need a consultation and a booked session. Message the studio before you go, say what you want and roughly how big, and ask whether it can be done the same day.

Are there tattoo studios in Gozo?

Yes, there are studios in Gozo, and some artists from Malta also take bookings there. If you are visiting, ask about walk-in slots in advance, and plan your swimming. Fresh tattoos should stay out of the sea and the pool while they heal, so many people book near the end of a holiday rather than the start.
