About driving instructors in Malta

Driving instructors in Malta teach through motoring schools or on their own as approved instructors. Most lessons are for a car licence, but some schools also teach motorcycles, trucks and buses. The route to a licence runs through a theory test first, then practice on a learner's permit, then the practical test, which the law calls the test of skills and behaviour.

Learners arrive from very different places. School leavers start from nothing. Newcomers to Malta may have years of driving elsewhere but want lessons on local roundabouts, hills and narrow village streets before the test. Others just need a few hours to rebuild confidence after a long break from the wheel.

What you pay depends on the length of each lesson, how many you need, whether you buy a package, the vehicle category and whether you learn in a manual or an automatic. Using the school's car for the test may be a separate charge. Ask what a package covers and whether unused lessons are refunded.

Good to know in Malta

  • Under the Motor Vehicles (Driving Licences) Regulations (S.L. 65.18), driving instruction against payment may only be given by approved driving instructors registered with the Authority for Transport in Malta (Transport Malta). Source
  • The driving test has two parts: a theory test and a test of skills and behaviour. You can only sit the test of skills and behaviour once you hold a pass certificate for the theory test. You must be 18 to sit the theory test, or 16 for a category AM licence. Source
  • A standard learner's permit lets you practise driving under instruction on all days except Sundays and public holidays. Source
  • Cars licensed for category B instruction must have dual controls. Vehicles used by a motoring school or approved instructor show a green letter L on a white background with the school's authorisation number, and licensed operators must make sure their instructors wear the identification tag issued by the Authority. Questions

How much are driving lessons in Malta?

Schools price by the lesson or by the package, and lesson lengths vary, so compare the cost per hour rather than per lesson. The vehicle category, manual or automatic, and the number of lessons you need all change the total. Ask whether theory preparation and the car for the test are included, and what happens to lessons you do not use.

How do I get a driving licence in Malta?

Under the driving licence regulations, you pass a theory test first, then practise on a learner's permit under instruction, then sit the test of skills and behaviour. You need the theory pass certificate before you can take the practical test. Your instructor can explain how each step is booked with Transport Malta. If you hold a licence from another country, ask Transport Malta what applies to you.

Can I take driving lessons in Gozo?

Check each profile for the towns covered. An instructor based in Gozo saves you a ferry crossing for every lesson. If you plan to learn in Malta, ask whether the instructor can meet you near the ferry, and ask where your test is likely to be held so you practise on the same kind of roads.

How do I check a driving instructor is registered?

Paid driving lessons can only be given by approved instructors registered with Transport Malta. Instructors employed by a motoring school wear an identification tag issued by the Authority, and the school's cars carry a green L plate with its authorisation number. Ask to see the tag and confirm with Transport Malta if you are unsure. Tminta does not check registrations.
