About interior designers in Malta

Interior designers work inside the shell of a building. They plan how rooms are used, choose tiles, kitchens, bathrooms, lighting, colours and furniture, and produce drawings and 3D visuals for the trades to follow. Some design only. Others also order materials and manage the carpenter, electrician and tiler on site. Some focus on homes, others on restaurants, shops or offices.

People often hire one after buying a flat off plan, when renovating an older townhouse, or when furnishing a property to let. If the work moves walls, opens up rooms or touches the structure, you will normally also need a perit, the warranted architect or civil engineer. Many designers work alongside one.

Fees depend on the size of the space, how many rooms are included, whether you want concept and drawings only or full project management, and the number of revisions. Some charge a fixed fee, others an hourly rate or a share of the budget. Ask how they are paid, and whether they earn commission on products they choose for you.

Good to know in Malta

  • Architecture and civil engineering are a regulated profession in Malta under the Periti Act (Cap. 622). No person may practise it without a warrant from the Periti Warranting Board, which keeps a public register of warrant holders. Interior design on its own is not covered by that warrant. Source

Questions

How much does an interior designer cost in Malta?

It depends on the scope. A consultation and a mood board is a small job, while a full home with drawings, sourcing and site management runs for months. Some designers charge a fixed fee per project, some by the hour, and some a share of the fit-out budget. Ask for the fee in writing, what each stage includes, and how purchases and supplier discounts are handled.

What is the difference between an interior designer and an architect in Malta?

An interior designer plans the inside: layout, finishes, lighting and furniture. An architect in Malta is a perit, who holds a warrant and deals with the building itself, including permits and structural work. For a flat refit with no structural change, a designer may be all you need. If walls move or the building is altered, you will normally need a perit as well.

Interior designer or interior decorator: which do I need?

A decorator mainly works with what is already there: colours, fabrics, furniture, art and accessories. A designer can also replan the space, redo kitchens and bathrooms and draw details for the trades. If you are refreshing a room, a decorator may suit you. If you are changing how the space works, look for a designer.

How do I choose the best interior designer in Malta?

Start with the portfolio and see whether the style fits yours. Ask for photos of finished rooms rather than renders, and speak to a past client if you can. Notice how they communicate, how they handle a budget and who you will deal with day to day. A clear written scope protects both of you.
